Yeah, its a miracle. I may actually take up blogging. Several people say I should, so here goes. I don’t have anything profound right now because allergies are causing my snotty head not to think, but I do have a good quote. Its by David Seamon, who when I was an undergrad, was head of UVA’s Etext program. He taught my my first HTML in a short course. I remember thinking what he did was pretty darn cool, even though I was only in my first semester of college and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. So maybe in some indirect way, he’s an inspiration for me becoming a librarian. Anyway, he’s at Dartmouth now and someone quoted him at ALA as saying, “We’re moving this profession one death at a time”. How true. My coworkers that desperately need to retire say they won’t. So no change for us. I want to say, “geez people, enjoy old age!” But I guess I’m just not that lucky. I guess this is an issue elsewhere. If librarians stay in the field well past retirement age, then us young’ins will never have a chance. We’ll become so disillusioned that we’ll drop out before they drop dead.

Man, I’m cynical today. I blame Claritin. But really, turnover is good in a profession. Its inevitable.

For what its worth, I’ve been named to ALA’s emerging leaders program. I jump at leadership training and getting an “in” to organizations of which I’m a part of, but there are caveats. The most immediate is money–conferences get expensive, especially when you have less than $1000 a year and you have to work for it. The other part is “will this be ALA endocrination”? I disagree with many of the objectives and directions of the organization, which is part of the reason I want to get more involved. I will not let ALA influence my opinions, and I hope this initiative allows the organization to open itself up to the opinions of those of us that are new or coming in with outside ideas. After all, we are the future of the organization and if they don’t listen to us, then we’ll leave in droves (and one could argue we already are).
