For what its worth, I’ve been named to ALA’s emerging leaders program. I jump at leadership training and getting an “in” to organizations of which I’m a part of, but there are caveats. The most immediate is money–conferences get expensive, especially when you have less than $1000 a year and you have to work for it. The other part is “will this be ALA endocrination”? I disagree with many of the objectives and directions of the organization, which is part of the reason I want to get more involved. I will not let ALA influence my opinions, and I hope this initiative allows the organization to open itself up to the opinions of those of us that are new or coming in with outside ideas. After all, we are the future of the organization and if they don’t listen to us, then we’ll leave in droves (and one could argue we already are).
